avery This is possibly the hardest album to talk about in the best way possible. Gorgeous work, but completely indescribable in exactly how gorgeous it is. Bonus points for being somewhat of a self-enclosed multimedia project. Favorite track: Aelen Rache.

about

The Newcomer: 'Mirelet Unsette Moiyana'
KALEIDOSCOPE KÆ003 // Aether Editions

After sending pulsating shockwaves across the early 2010s music scene with widely lauded releases under another moniker, the singular artist’s acclaim saw them traveling to play everywhere from underground London warehouse parties to European gallery spaces, and US club nights, garnering rave reviews and a cult following on the way. Refusing to relent to the expected regular album cycle, and to fans’ dismay, they suddenly disappeared from view, retreating to work on new material on entirely their own terms, away from the glare of attention.

The first publicly available fruits to appear are finally here in the form of ‘Mirelet Unsette Moiyana’, a glowing testament to individual clarity of vision. From the mantra-like EP title, to The Newcomer’s name as an allusion to openness and ‘beginner’s mind’, the direct and hopeful humanity of this music is a necessary breath of fresh air in today’s difficult and clouded times.

As in thrall to traditional craft as to cutting edge tech, The Newcomer relays memories of “a powerful vision of a world; the reflection of it’s makers... a feeling of true belonging”. The tracks somehow speaking to early folk and traditional musics and our oncoming unknown future simultaneously. All of this is audible in the scuffed electronics that recall Aphex Twin’s most delicate moments along with the skittering rhythms of Fela Kuti, the crisp melodic figures of Steve Reich and the bit-crushed majesty of Fennesz.

An incredibly tender collection, the release is imbued with a deep emotional charge that reaches out and envelops like a prehistoric scrawl lit up in holographic neon.

Available standalone from January 20th on all digital & streaming services and also as Deluxe Edition on our Bandcamp bundled with artist-created imagery, text, an alternate ‘nocturnal’ version of the EP, and other digital artefacts.
